Our Story:
How Graystone Counselling & Consulting Was Born

When Cara Beth Elliott, Founder of GRAYSTONE COUNSELLING & CONSULTING decided to transition from her 12-year teaching career to establish Graystone, it wasn’t a decision made lightly. It was inspired by countless conversations with adolescents aged 12 to 17—young people navigating a particularly challenging phase of life.
These teens often expressed a profound sense of being “stuck in the gray zone.” They were no longer fully dependent on their parents or guardians but were also not yet independent adults with the responsibilities of a job, their own home, or a vehicle. They yearned for independence yet felt unprepared or unsupported to navigate the complexities of this transition.
Cara recognized this “gray zone” as a critical stage in their development—a space where identity, resilience, and life skills could either flourish or falter depending on the guidance they received. These conversations ignited her passion to empower young people to manage their challenges and thrive within the uncertainty.
Since its founding, GRAYSTONE COUNSELLING & CONSULTING has grown into more than a therapy practice for individuals, couples and families—it’s a trusted partner on your journey toward health, balance, and transformation. Our name is a powerful reminder that even in life’s grayest moments, there is resilience, beauty, and the potential for meaningful growth.
The Significance of “Gray” in Counselling & Health
Gray is often viewed as the space between extremes—neither black nor white but a blend of both. In counselling and health, it symbolizes:
Balance
Life is rarely absolute; healing often lies in navigating the gray areas and finding equilibrium in our thoughts, emotions, and actions.
Uncertainty & Growth
Gray represents the unknown and the willingness to explore ambiguity, which is essential for growth and self-discovery.
Neutrality &
Non-Judgment
In therapy, gray embodies a safe, unbiased space where clients can explore their stories without fear of judgment.
Gray reminds us that it’s okay to exist in the in-between, to embrace complexity, and to find peace in the journey rather than the destination.
Why "Stone"?
Stone represents:
- Strength and Resilience: Just as stone endures the test of time, we believe in the enduring strength of the human spirit.
- Foundation and Stability: In counseling, we work with clients to build a solid foundation for their mental and emotional well-being.
- Natural Beauty: Like the uniqueness of each stone, every person’s journey is individual and worth celebrating.
The Name "Graystone" Together
The combination of Gray and Stone reflects our mission:
- Creating Balance in Strength: Helping individuals find harmony in their struggles while embracing their inherent resilience.
- Safe and Grounded Space: Offering a steady, neutral environment for self-exploration and growth.
- Empowerment Through Transformation: Just as stones are shaped by time and pressure, we support clients as they navigate life’s challenges to emerge stronger and more empowered.
